Long associated with the dressing of surfaces, ceramics today occupies an increasingly prominent place in architectural expression. Texture, light, relief, surface continuity: the material goes beyond its purely functional role to contribute to the identity and experience of spaces. It is within this evolving landscape that Ceramiche Refin has established its approach.

Since 1962, the Italian company, a member of Gruppo Concorde, has developed a vision in which technological innovation goes hand in hand with a thoughtful exploration of materials. Behind each collection lies less the pursuit of a particular effect than the ambition to offer architects a vocabulary capable of engaging with the new languages of architectural design. The opening of Refin Studio Paris, in the heart of Paris’s 11th arrondissement, follows this same philosophy. Here, the showroom gives way to a space dedicated to design and experimentation. A material library, interactive table, technical area and Light Room come together in an environment designed for handling, comparing and testing materials. The material is no longer simply displayed: it is put to the test of the project.

This shift reflects a broader evolution. Faced with architects working within increasingly complex requirements — performance, sustainability, flexibility and identity — brands can no longer simply develop collections. They are becoming design partners. Refin Studio Paris embodies this transformation: a place where technical expertise gives way to dialogue, and specification evolves into support and collaboration.

This ambition to move beyond the sole realm of production also informs Ceramiche Refin’s research into materiality. The Reliefs, which transform wall surfaces into volumes sculpted by light, and the DTS – Daring Art Explorations programme, developed with artists such as Quayola and Oliver Laric, reflect a broader cultural ambition: to consider ceramics as a field of experimentation, capable of engaging with art, digital technologies and the new imaginaries of architecture.

At a time when the boundaries between design, industry and creative practice are being redefined, this approach feels particularly relevant. The value of a material no longer lies solely in its performance, but in its ability to inform design, inspire new uses and open up new narratives.
