The French designer, famous for her crescent moon prints and sustainable approach, unveiled her new project this year: Marine Serre Maison.
Fashion and tableware have always been closely linked. Influencing each other, these two worlds increasingly intersect and collide, particularly in advertising campaigns and marketing initiatives that showcase another key ingredient of the moment: food. Many fashion houses are getting involved in this intertwining, with Hermès leading the way, followed more recently by Louis Vuitton. But now it’s the turn of designer Marine Serre to take the plunge by launching her first tableware collection, Maison Marine Serre. A leading figure in sustainable and responsible fashion, the French designer is now known throughout the world, with her studio continuing to grow without ever changing the values that drive her. Among the key motifs that have contributed to her success is the famous crescent moon, known as All Over Moon, which appears on the fabrics of her ready-to-wear collection.
Now, the print has transcended its original boundaries and the medium of textiles to land on the ceramics of her first tableware collection. Bringing together coffee cups, plates, mugs and saucers, this first opus features the famous crescent moon motif in black on white.
To bring this first ceramic collection to life, the designer, who is committed to French design and local craftsmanship, entrusted the production of her pieces to the Faïencerie de Gien, a workshop certified as an Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) and founded over 200 years ago in the Loire Valley. A bicentennial company that finds its roots in the past, but which Marine Serre propels into the present by designing upcycled tableware. The first line from Maison Marine Serre is made from the pottery’s scraps and unsold items, transformed to take on new forms. This approach promotes French craftsmanship while incorporating it into a sustainable process, also using local raw materials. Elements that cannot be upcycled have been sourced from the surrounding area, with the pottery using kaolin, clay and sand, as well as natural oxide-based pigments. As the designer herself explains, “our monogram lives on another canvas, still imbued with memory, still the result of upcycling.”
“Marine Serre goes far beyond fashion. It seemed only natural to develop the lifestyle side of the brand,” added the designer at the launch of Marine Serre Maison. “Gien has always been a reference, and this collaboration reflects our shared values: preserving meaningful craftsmanship in a fast-paced world. Our iconic monogram now lives on another type of canvas — rooted in memory, made for everyday life.”
This first collection marks the designer’s desire to diversify, as she seems determined to distil her values and aesthetic far beyond fashion, with the crescent moon undoubtedly reserving a promising future for itself. •
